This park was renamed in February 2025 to honor Danny Lopez, a Tohono O'odham educator and elder who dedicated his life to preserving the Tohono O'odham language and culture.
Park History
This park has undergone three name changes throughout its history, reflecting evolving cultural values and community priorities. Originally known as Silverbell Park, the site was renamed in 1990 to Christopher Columbus Park in anticipation of the 500-year anniversary of Columbus' arrival in the Americas. The renaming effort was spearheaded by the Tucson chapter of the Knights of Columbus, who sought to honor the explorer as part of the international celebration.
However, as perspectives on history and cultural representation shifted, the park was renamed again in February 2025 to honor Danny Lopez, a revered Tohono O'odham educator and elder. Lopez dedicated his life to preserving and promoting the Tohono O'odham language and culture, leaving a lasting legacy for his community and future generations. The park’s current name, Danny Lopez Park, stands as a testament to the importance of honoring local Indigenous leaders and their contributions to cultural preservation and education.
